When a poor artist’s housekeeper brings home a cat instead of food, it seems that it won’t be long before they all starve. But their luck begins to change when the artist is commissioned to create a painting of the Buddha for their village’s temple.
Sometimes the painting came easy, sometimes it came hard; sometimes the artist was pleased with what he had done, sometimes he was disgusted.
“I still think about the letter you asked me to write. It nags at me, even though you’re gone and there’s no one to give it to anymore. Sometimes I work on it in my head, trying to map out the story you asked me to tell, about everything that happened this past fall and winter. It’s all still there, like a movie I can watch when I want to. Which is never.”
A Newberry winner, and a book I truly enjoyed! I don’t want to spoiler, but do expect some mystery, awkward friendships, sandwiches, misunderstood bullies, a game show host, a homeless guy, and some slightly creepy letters from an anonymous writer.
