I Judge Books

This month’s featured design embraces all things bookish. While writers are generally told to avoid done-to-death sayings, I think cliches and idioms are a fascinating part of language and culture. So, while I might steer clear of them in my novels, I have a lot of fun making them part of my other creative ventures.

Not Unlike a Simile

This month’s highlight is an original quote from yours truly! I love figures of speech and puns, so I toyed with bringing them together into something any word nerd would love. If you’re the kind of writer who likes to compare and contrast, I hope this style is speaking your language!

Lorem Ipsum

The fun thing about owning a shop is creating products that are specific to your very own taste and sense of humor. Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers. While inspired by Latin, it doesn’t translate to anything coherent. In a way, it’s like putting a [text goes here] disclaimer on your design.

I have a habit of turning hobbies into side hustles, so it’s not surprising that many of the designs I create for BumbleBess.com features my hand lettering.

Kindred Spirit

October’s Merch of the Month pick is in honor of our favorite autumn-adoring heroine, Anne Shirley! This was the first product I added to the shop using this style of varied lettering. It’s a fun and free-spirited reminder to embrace the things that make us unique, because those are the traits that help us connect with others.

Merch of the Month

My love for heroines of classic literature and the art of typography inspired me to open my own shop, BumbleBess.com. Through words and the occasional curlicue, I celebrate favorite heroines like Elizabeth Bennett, Anne Shirley, and Wendy Darling.

Obstinate, Headstrong Girl

This Merch of the Month pick is one I designed before I even knew I would be opening a shop. It was originally created as a gift for my Pride & Prejudice obsessed sister, who is as loyal-hearted, strong-willed, and free-spirited as Lizzie Bennett herself. For all the audacious ladies out there, this is for you.

Merch of the Month

My love for fantastic fiction and gorgeous graphics inspired me to open my own shop, BumbleBess.com. There, I blend all of my favorite things… literary allusions, typographic design, and plenty of good humor.

Read Voraciously, Live Vicariously

Read Voraciously, Live Vicariously

This Merch of the Month pick is one of my personal favorites. The quote “read voraciously, live vicariously” is something I coined myself, inspired by that unique sensation of getting wholly lost between the pages of a good book.

For the Love of Fonts 3: Typography Tips & Terms for Beginners

Now that you know how to pick the perfect fonts and match them up, I’m sure you’re eager to start using them. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than turning everyday words into something eye-catching, effortless, and effective. Which is deeply ironic, since text-only design used to be the bane of my existence. Ah, if Past Elza could only see me now…

Despite our rocky beginnings, typography is an integral (and enjoyable) part of my graphic design work. Today, I’m going to help you begin to make sense of the various concepts, common terms, and techniques that make up the world of typography.
